Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Design and Technology Education

In this four-year programme students are trained
in designing, drawing and making furniture, using both hand tools
and machines. Studies include the construction principles and the
technology of furniture making as well as materials used past and
present. This will enable students to explore new technologies and
to develop solutions in a creative and imaginative way.
Apart from the practical work students will learn about the
theoretical background of education and have the opportunity to gain
practical experience in teaching. Through various teaching practice
events throughout the four years in Letterfrack students will learn
everything it takes to become a good educationalist. They will be
competent in teaching construction studies, design and technical
drawing to students in second level education, to prepare and
deliver classes in a way that encourages students to develop and
express their creativity .
As a Bachelor Honours in Design and Technology Education, graduates
are qualified to teach Materials Technology (Wood), Technical
Graphics to Junior Certificate level and Architectural Technology
and Design and Communication Studies Leaving Certificate honours
standard in the Irish second level school system.
The minimum entry requirement is a pass in 6 Leaving Certificate subjects including English or Irish and Mathematics. Two of the subjects must be passed at HC3 or better and must include Technical Drawing or Construction Studies.
