Bachelor of Science in Furniture Conservation and Restoration
GA 972
Programme Duration: Three years full time
Furniture conservation and restoration is a very
interesting profession concerned with various aspects of the
preservation of wooden heritage objects and antiques. This dynamic
programme equips graduates with a broad range of practical skills
and theoretical knowledge.
Conservation students commence to work on real antiques with growing
knowledge of conservation theory and methods. They are guided by
lecturers with extensive experience from working in museums and
private businesses. The practical work is complemented by a sound
knowledge base of the development of furniture styles and their
historic context. Students learn about applied science and
techniques used in the examination of objects, and in the
documentation of conservators work such as microscopy, photography,
freehand and technical drawing using CAD software. Business studies
provide a set of administrative skills required for the professional
practise.
Through intense contacts with Irish and international conservation
professionals the college will support advanced students to liaise
with industry during a 14 week work placement.
Graduates find employment as conservators in public institutions
such as museums, start their own business working on contract for
private and public clients or as consultants in the various branches
of the antique and heritage preservation field. The programme is
adhering to international conservation and restoration training
standards and the qualification equips graduates for employment for
both the national and international markets.
GMIT at Letterfrack will deliver an add-on programme with a level 8
qualification, the Bachelor Honours Degree. Bachelor Honours
Graduates can proceed to a Masters Degree (level 9). They may also
progress to post-graduate studies at Universities in Europe and
overseas.
