Bachelor of Science in Furniture Design and Manufacture

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Furniture Design and Manufacture is a three year Programme which has pioneered the integration of technological and design skills since its introduction in 1987. This course produces highly skilled graduates who combine their creative strengths with manufacturing technology in the design and making of innovative furniture products.

The progression and focus of skill and knowledge builds through the programme with traditional techniques evolving to computer aided design
and manufacture, allowing graduates entry to the industry sector of most interest to them, i.e. from a craft based workshop to an industrial
manufacturer. Keen attention is paid to intelligent design that addresses market, cost and manufacture and the ability of the graduate to produce high quality furniture product prototypes.

The Programme addresses a need within the furniture industry that seeks graduates who can operate at junior management level, taking positions as supervisors and where they can progress to team leaders. People who have a complimentary mix of design and manufacturing skill and knowledge; who can contribute to product development, re-design, prototyping, and design management.

Career Opportunities
A number of graduates have taken up junior management positions where they play a pivotal role in the design and development of market focused furniture prototypes within the SME segment of the furniture industry.

Other graduates of the Programme have taken up positions in smaller craft workshops, further building their skills and knowledge over time to become highly proficient designer-makers.
Graduates seeking this career path can present for the award of Higher Certificate in Furniture Design and Manufacture after completion of the first two years of study; provided all modules have been passed successfully.
